For too many years, our New Year’s Eve has been spent sitting at home, only venturing out at midnight to stand on the roof of our condo to watch the fireworks. We decided to be different this year, partly because we had guests and partly because we don’t have a condo roof to stand on any more. So we went to Bangkok.
I still wanted fireworks, and had no interest in spending hours in the Skytrain before spending the last moments of 2014 in a thronging mass at Central World, wondering if I was about to be crushed in a stampede; so we went on the river.
The Royal Orchid Sheraton was the hotel of choice and the rooms offered a good view down the river:

Which is just as well, because their other alternatives that facilitated fireworks perusal were to purchase a dinner next to the water, where the smell of sewage would mingle with your massively overpriced prawn cocktail; or pay 1,500 baht just before midnight for the privilege of one “standard drink” and the opportunity to stand amongst a pissed-up throng of diners eager to claim the best spots to justify their dinner bill. As my dear departed grandma might have said: “fuck that for a game of soldiers”.
Instead we went for some very good food at Issaya which offerd a thousand course set meal which unfortunately was difficult to serve in the three hours we had allowed for the occasion. Then it was back to the hotel and The Son’s room where I finished off the year by nicking a beer from his fridge. I like to live on the edge.
The windows needed a clean, but the fireworks were fantastic and we had a great view. Stuck the camera on a piece of furniture and took a few shots:

Then we went to bed spent the night dancing and partying to the early hours.
The next day there were further gastronomic delights at Bo Lan near Thonglor. Excellent food and enjoyed without the pressure of having to be somewhere else to watch some fireworks. In the evening we went to the top of the State Tower for some unusual cocktails. I had a panic attack when presented with the food menu and proceeded to order the most expensive dish of my life; but hey, it’s 2015! Views were good too:

Finished with Bangkok, it was off to the airport the following morning for the next part of our trip.
