Unless you live somewhere that is awash with attractions, it can be hard to find places to take visitors, especially if they have visited previously; and instead there is a danger of just sitting at home watching TV and eating vast quantities of Turkish Delight. Fortunately, my future daughter-in-law is an expert researcher and discovered somewhere in Pattaya that we had never heard of, even though we live here,
The Escape Hunt business started in Bangkok, but now has branches across the world; including Pattaya. The Pattaya outlet opened a couple of months ago on Theppraya road in the new complex on the road down to Pattaya Park.
We booked on-line and rolled up at the appointed time, not really knowing what to expect. We were greeted by a couple of very friendly young ladies who provided us with water and were about to describe what was going to happen; until one of them spotted my T-shirt….
The Son worked on Grand Theft Auto 4 and sent me all manner of promotional material, including a T-shirt which I happened to be wearing on that morning. One of the young ladies became very excited by this and proclaimed it her most favourite game of all time. Naturally I was not going to let a proud father moment pass me by, and I pointed to The Son and revealed that he had been involved in making the game. Much to his embarrassment, there then followed five minutes of squealing and photo taking. A rock star moment for my offspring, which won’t be his last if the latest project he is working on comes to fruition.
Once the hero-worship had abated somewhat, we could get on with the game. The rules were simple. There had been a murder and we had one hour to solve it. We were to be locked in a room full of clues, and solving them would lead to other rooms and the identity of the murderer. We would be watched via video feed by a games master who was available to give hints should we become stuck (for a time penalty).
Then we were locked in a room with a count-down timer on the wall. There were many items to investigate, some of which were of no relevance and some which led to keys, combinations, other objects or further information about the murder. We never asked for a clue, but the games master did pop in from time to time to push us in the right direction. Fifty five minutes later we had escaped the room after identifying the murderer and collapsed onto comfy sofas for a cup of tea and a discussion as to how we could have done it much quicker had we not been so stupid. Suitably pumped up from the experience, we ignored our previous agreement not to dress up in silly clothes, and were soon prancing around in deer stalker hats with pipes and magnifying glasses. Several blackmail-worthy photos were taken.
A fun experience, professionally run by charming staff. It’s not cheap, but discounts are on offer, including a 50% voucher for return visitors. As they offer three different scenarios, we were back a few days later to do it again.
Recommended.

2015-01-12| Chang Noi saysI thought it was a roll play with a murdered corpse found in the house where the paying guests each have a roll in the mystery game, but it seems not like that, right?
2015-01-12| genuinej saysWrong! I’ll leave it to Spike to take the leading role in putting you right on this one.
2015-01-13| Spike saysExpect genuinej was more concerned with the use of “roll” rather than “role”; but indeed it is not like that. Everyone in the party works together to try and solve the clues.
2015-01-14| Chang Noi saysSorry … typo …. too cold here up north. The role-play-murder-case can be fun, did that once in Holland in my previous life.
