More than twenty two hours behind the wheel over three days. 1594 Kilometres covered. The first road trip to test out our new transport and it was a great experience; such an effortless tourer.

Of course there were many photos. But after rising at 0500 this morning to view a lake full of water lilies and then driving home from Udon Thani; the details will have to wait until tomorrow. Beer, then bed.

I’m confused. How do you drive on dirt roads like that and not get any dust on your car? Is it some special German technology?

Aha …. Han Kumphawaphi …. been there last year at the wrong time of the year and we will be there someday next week in the bloody early morning. Your photos will be better.

It’s BMW’s patented “Dustbegone” nano coating technology which repels all objects from the bodywork (apart from a speeding bus). You only need to wash the car every three months. Amazing!

Not photo-shopped then?

It’s either photoshopped, or I pulled off the main road to take a pee and took a photo while I was there and the road is two metres to the right of the frame.

0600 is the best time to go out.

72.45 kilometres per hour average, you were being quite good, weren’t you? Very pleased to hear that the new barouche is giving every satisfaction, sure looks the part!

That included sitting at traffic lights, crawling through towns, and spending hours stuck behind lorries loaded with sugar cane.

Which is exactly why I prefer the rivers, in a boat of course… Useless for actually going anywhere but so relaxing.

Well to BE there …. we did wake-up at 5:30 and had to drive another “30 minutes” (what seemed more as 50 minutes) so we were on our boat at 7:00. And we were told the best time of the year is actually mid-Jan … so we might be back next month. I really liked the birds, both flying high above us in big groups (without GPS or radar) and flying around the boat like MIG’s in pursue of a F16.

So for a next test-ride my I suggest route 12 from Chumpae to Lomsak thru Nam Nao National Park (no entrance fee) but in the early morning be aware of crossing elephants (not me). By Thai motor-bikers called “Nam Nao Racing Circuit”. And route 2331 from Lomsak to Phu Thap Boek (going from 200m high to 1800m high in 20km). And route 11 from Uttradit to Den Chai (divided highway in the mountains).

Hi Ivo, found your big stash of classic cars in the abandoned service station up on Highway Two last year. Owner very difficult and everything rusting and rotting away, got to see very little close up but an interesting place. Thanks for the tip! Be careful on that bike…
