Eager to try out me new 40-150mm lens, I arise at the break of dawn (0700) and make my way to the Thai Polo Club where there are rumours of a horse jumping competition. Took a while to find it, and after an hour I had had enough due to the rapidly rising temperatures (it is like April here at the moment); but got enough shots to convince me this is one pretty special lens.

I think Polo may be next; you have been warned.

2014-11-30| Clive saysSpike, were these shots hand-held, or did you have Brian with you?
2014-11-30| Spike saysHand held. I tried a tripod but not needed, could handhold with this combination all day; so light compared to the Canon setup I used to use.
2014-11-30| Derek saysI’d vote for hand-held, far too crisp for Brian’s work…
2014-11-30| Wally saysHow does this new lens compare to your previous Canon 300mm L in a similar environment ?
2014-12-01| Spike saysMuch, much lighter. Image quality has a similar “wow” impact when you view at 100%. The viewing angles are the same of course, but because this is a 150mm lens, I get more depth of field at a given F stop than I did with the 300mm. This is very useful for horsey shooting as I can get the horse and rider in focus, whilst still using a wide enough aperture to give me the shutter speed I want. And of course I can zoom if I need to. More utility at a third of the price, I am smitten.
