We are used to the mess of wiring hanging from poles around Thailand. Someone, somewhere, knows how it all links together, because the electricity supply is mainly reliable; only disrupted where we live by the wildest of storms.
But what if you wanted to build a house and the power cables were rather inconveniently routed across where you wanted to put your roof? Who would you call? Who would come and move the mess so you could build your cosy house free of cabling? Probably nobody; so instead of moving the cables; you just build round them…

Request permission to copy to some building and electrical inspectors in the hope of encouraging heart attacks…
2014-06-13| Clive saysAlthough, if you’re going to the trouble of providing that nice, warm, safe and indoor environment for those power cables, then I think you should be allowed to select the internal route they take. Like… Through the fridge, the TV, the air-con units, and so on.
I’ll never forget my first visit to Thailand, walking down into town at night in search of a meal, and hearing all the power cables humming and buzzing. Or seeing the little blue sparks jumping about them in the dark…

The power company ran three phase in under the veranda and simply clamped the individual power connections thereon. The amount of power stolen in Thailand by those with a bit of nous must be eye-watering…
