If you get my drift

What’s the most dangerous position you have taken a photo from Spike?

The one that got this:

ASP_6012

It was at a stadium in Bangalore five years ago and I was shooting a round of the Indian National Rally Championship for the organisers. The last day featured the stadium event, and the only way to get shots on one corner was to stand on the outside of the bend. It was OK though, because there was a small piece of plastic tape protecting me from the cars and had they run wide they would have had to pull down the tape before crushing me. It was stupid; but I got some shots.

Today I was back at the drift racing and soon picking up some images with my 75mm lens, like these two:

S5188663

S5188696

The problem with using the longer lens was that it was impossible to find an angle to pan for a blurred background; and I couldn’t stand further back to do panning because there was a low wall round the track that would have interfered with the shots. The only solution was to stand close to the wall, use a short lens, and then pan as the cars came past. The only downside of this was that the cars were drifting out towards the wall; and if they over-drifted then I could have a face full of drift car.

Had she who must be obeyed been with me then I am sure my plan would have been vetoed; but she wasn’t, so I caught these whilst managing to avoid a car in the face:

S5188792

S5188791

S5188810

S5188867

S5188743

S5188800

S5188757

S5188834

E-M1 with 12-40mm at 25-30mm, 1/160th second. Brown underpants.

I think the chap in the ‘infinity wheels’ green car needs to rethink his rear suspension. They’re not so much infinity whren you’re burning them out on your bodywork.
