After several years and many episodes, it was left to the last episode of all to provide us with resolution. Would our hero die or escape to pursue a life elsewhere? What would be the fate of the other characters in this intense drama? How could all the unresolved issues be tied up in the final hour? Would fans of the show feel satisfied with the outcome?
This fan was left completely unsatisfied. In fact I was already losing interest as this final season progressed. Weak storyline, poor acting, dull script; I just wanted it to finish. Thankfully it did that, and ended with one of the worst episodes from a series already noted for bad episodes. A pathetic attempt at pathos and romance, unfulfilled character resolution and an ending so unlikely it was laughable. Utter crap and I am glad the nonsense is finished with.
I am of course referring to Dexter, a series I once enjoyed but one which has long since reached its sell-by date and has been marking time towards a weak ending. To be honest, the last episode was so boring and cringe-worthy, I spent much of it playing on my iPad, lifting my head only occasionally to mock in derision. Thank goodness that is over.
Then last night I sat down to watch the final two episodes of Breaking Bad. Turned down the lights, opened a beer, and let the second last episode run. As has so often been the case, many Breaking Bad episodes are slow burners, setting us up for what is to come; and this one was one of those. As it ended, I was left to wonder how they would wrap up the story in the remaining 57 minutes.
I didn’t watch the last episode immediately. Spent about and hour savouring what was to come, before finally pressing play and allowing the genius of Vince Gilligan to unfold. Perfect ending to a stunning series. Some shocks, some humour, and the usual masterful camera-work (that sequence with Skyler in the kitchen….). And a resolution for all the characters, maybe not as shocking as some past events, but a satisfying end to the best entertainment for many a year.
What’s next? Well tomorrow I am off to order the complete Breaking Bad Blu-Ray set, with 55 hours of extras, due for release at the end of November. And I have deleted any trace of that Dexter shit from my hard drive.
