Not so grand opening

· 340 words · 2 minute read

Those who live in the Pattaya area cannot fail to have noticed the imminent arrival of an exciting new tourist attraction, thanks to thousands of these plastered all over town:

A teddy bear museum! A grand opening! Today! Frankly, I found it hard to sleep last night, and it was with barely concealed excitement that I took my equally excited wife down to Beach Road this morning for a surfeit of bears.

And what a scene greeted us. People in bear costumes! A man at a till! And, err, that was all; because the magnificent teddy bear museum opening has been delayed for ten days. Too late to change the thousands of signs, and I expect the people in bear costumes are in for some pretty heavy abuse over the next few days as people arrive from all over Thailand to witness the accumulation of teddies; only to discover that they have to come back later.

As a sop for the deceived, the man with the till was offering tickets for the eventual show at 10% of the cost. Dual pricing is firmly in place of course, and the normal price is 250 baht for a Thai and 500 baht for the rest of us. Normally I would wave my driving licence, but as a foreigner ticket was only 50 baht today, it wasn’t worth arguing. The other magnificent deal was that for every four tickets purchased you received a genuine polyester teddy bear of particularly revolting countenance. She who must be obeyed is a particular sucker for these offers and came away with two teddy bears, goodness only knows what she is going to do with the additional six tickets she purchased.

An excess of tickets duly acquired, you can be sure that a scintillating teddy post will be appearing here soon. I’ll bet you can hardly wait.
