Treasure Trove

A trip to Bangkok where she who must be obeyed has a meeting, leaving me to fend for myself for the day. I think maybe yet another wander around Chinatown with a camera; but it would also be good to check out some of the second-hand camera shops which are rumoured to be found there; although I have never found them.

So a quick visit is made to Mr. Google and I discover that there is actually such a shop in the heart of Sukhumvit, close to Ploenchit station. Even better, the name is SiamTLR, and with my current interest in Yashica TLRs, maybe there is a way I can spend my wife’s expenses for the day.

Inside, and the owner is busy fixing cameras:

His name is Khun Surasak and he is a very nice chap who speaks good English and clearly keen to share his love of film cameras. He buys in cameras from Europe, provides some love and care, and then puts them up for sale. He had a bench of items awaiting attention:

And a shop full of interesting gear spanning more than half a century:

If you fancy a film camera to play with, this is the place to come to find one, map here.

Personally, I could have come out with an armful of stuff, but sanity prevailed (up to a point) and I restricted myself to doubling my TLR collection:

Nice.

Then it was off to a coffee shop to fiddle with the Yashica, after which there was no time to hit Chinatown. Still, a good day, slightly diminished by having to chauffeur my beloved home in the dark and the rain. Slept very well.

Over here this kind of small repair shops have all but disappeared. I’m trying to replace the eyepiece of my camera with a +2 dioptre one, but can’t get it loose. And the camera dealer isn’t any better at it than I am. For all I know they don’t even have a workshop in their shop anymore…

Thank you for posting this. I stopped in there yesterday. What a wonderful little shop. And what a great variety of stuff. It’s almost a museum of older film cameras.

Were you wearing that T-shirt for a wager?

My wife bought me that T-shirt. I am wearing for survival.
