No snow

· 816 words · 4 minute read

Fresh from my processing disaster, I developed another film last night. This was my usual Kodak T-Max 100 ISO, taken from the Yashica 12 which I used to duplicate the shots from the Yashica 635 (I am still in evaluation mode). The film is still bowed in the scanner, so sharpness is not of the best; but pleasing enough to my eye.

Hate to say it but the snowy pic is better. This one is a bit flat, No contrast. I noticed the same flat feeling in the buddha pic awhile ago. Looks like you need to invest in a proper darkroom set-up.

there is some dust cleanup needed - photoshop or lightroom works fine for that - but there is a weird thing in the top right corner - looks like the film may have been touching? or some stain of some kind.. - not dust or lint - but post can still fix it….I think maybe you can scan at a bit higher resolution to get the most from the negative size…and then shrink it down for web viewing…it still shows the resolution of film compared to digital…( yeah, it’s more work but do you really want to spend $50,000 on a medium format scanning back??? ) I’m checking back on your adventures and happy to see progress!…Cheers…

I have a question - for Spike and the regular M43 denizens to be found lurking here…

By a curious twist of fate I’ve just received a cheque for about £1010 [dividend on shares] and whilst I can re-invest it, I’m tempted to explore it’s potential for adding some fun factor to my photography. Obviously prices in the UK are always obscenely high, but potential options may include anything from the list below. I’d be interested in your thoughts and suggestions…

Cameras:- Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX1 [£500] - I have one, but a second would let me swap between 2 primes in the field, without dismantling… Olympus OM-D EM-5 [£800] - now down £300 since introduction…

Lenses:- Panasonic Leica Summilux 25mm [£440] Olympus 75mm f1.8 [£950] Panasonic 45mm f2.8 Macro [£550] Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8 GX [£840] Panasonic 35-100mm f2.8 GX [£1000]

I currently have a GX1, Panasonic 20mm, Voigtlander 25mm, Olympus 45mm, Panasonic 14-42 kit lens, Olympus 40-150mm [surprisingly good], Panasonic 100-300mm, Panasonic 7-14mm

If the options include the Panasonic 25mm I might be tempted to offer up the Voigtlander for sale on the grounds that whilst sublime it’s too heavy for this company and doesn’t get the usage it deserves… I reckon I might get £450-£500 for it, so can stretch budget accordingly.

Thanks in advance…

If you’re thinking of buying the OM-D there’s no need to pay £800 in the UK. I’ve just bought a second OM-D body and paid £577 at http://www.procamerashop.co.uk/ and can reccomend them. They’re based in the UK and and shipped the camera to me within a couple of days. They offered a 3% discount if you pay via direct bank transfer which I did and it was easy to do. Compared to most other places in the UK the price was almost £200 cheaper than anywhere else.

My recommendations would be:

  1. Olympus 75mm F1.8
  2. Olympus 75mm F1.8
  3. Olympus 75mm F1.8

Amazing lens, on my camera whenever possible, which is more often than you might expect.

GX1 is about to be replaced by GX7. E-M5 will be updated soon. I would wait and see how the body options look later in the year (E-M5 will be even cheaper then), and indulge in the best piece of glass in the M43 lineup and one of the best lenses available for any system.

If you sell the Voigtlander as well you might want to check the newer E-P5 from Oly - a few features more then the OMD but - no weathersealing, or built in viewfinder - the kit with the 17mm 1.8 and viewfinder is going for about $1399 here in Canada ( about £885 ) and the 75mm for about £569 whcih should take care of all your newfound wealth - not sure if you have import duties but you could check B&H or Adorama or (in Canada ) vistek.ca or Henrys.com…. According to the rumour sites the next OMD will be a “lite” version ( cheaper w/ less features) and the new heavy hitter will be one that can use both the 4/3 AND m4/3 lenses ( possible now but the 4/3 lenses are crap at autofocus on the m4/3 bodies ) - unclear wether it will be OMD-ish shape or more E-5-ish…

Another bit of learning, hard to keep negatives clean when they are drying. I now have some wetting solution which should help keep away the stains.
