Grow your own way*

· 468 words · 3 minute read

We make an occasional stop in certain shopping malls so that she who must be obeyed can knock back a shot of wheatgrass juice. Apparently it is good for health, and so it should be for the price they charge. With the arrival of our juicer, the suggestion was made again that we should grow our own. So I did. (When she who must be obeyed suggests “we” do something, that usually means that “I” do it, unless it involves shopping or eating).

Wheatgrass is not that difficult to grow. There are three stages: soak, sprout, plant. I bought a bag of organic seeds and poured a measure of two cups into a jar filled with water and left them overnight to soak. The next day I put them in a strainer and gave them a good rinse, and repeated the rinsing a couple of times a day for two days, by which time they were sprouting. Then I chucked them into a growing tray on top of some soil, covered them, and watered them twice a day. Two more days and they were growing nicely, so I removed the cover and let them grow in the open air for a few more days until they started to split, a sign they were ready for harvesting.

Harvesting was done with a pair of nail scissors and I had to cut a lot of grass just to make two shots of juice.

The rest was cut and put in the fridge for future consumption.

My two cups had filled one and half growing trays. The plan was to harvest the first crop and then let the grass grow back and let the cats eat it. But such was their enthusiasm at the sight of the trays full of grass, I was persuaded (told) to leave some of the second tray for their immediate enjoyment, so I did.

No doubt they will throw it up later in an inconvenient location. I wouldn’t blame them, it tastes bloody awful.

*The obvious title for this post would have been “Green green grass of home”, but I refuse to be associated with that appalling karaoke staple and instead settled for the bastardisation of a Fleetwood Mac classic. I thank you.

Another lonely day?

I hope it doesn’t occur to the cats that it could double as a back up litter tray.
