Prepared to transfer the film I took yesterday to the developing tank before heading off to bed last night. Chilled room, minimised sweat and other precautions taken; but the result was a disaster and after four attempts everything was a sweaty mess again; I have much to learn.

As a last resort, I tried a different type of reel that had just arrived in the post. It’s stainless steel and it has an entirely different loading mechanism with which I had practised twice. Film loaded with barely a hitch, so that was good.

This morning I developed it and hung it up to dry; noting a few crinkles and finger marks resulting from my failed attempts. Still, some of the shots looked OK; but the negatives had a curl on them when they were dry; so impossible to get a sharp scan. With all those provisos, plus the fact I am still struggling with the scanning software and that it was overcast and damp when I took this; here is one image from the film:

Given all the abuse and the scanning issues, not too bad. I have another shot of some flowers shot reasonably close at F3.5 with some trees in the background. The boken of the trees is absolutely fantastic; but the flowers are out of focus. Either I screwed up focusing (entirely possible, it was a hurried first shot of the day as I tried to avoid the drizzle), or there is a calibration issue with the camera which will be fun sorting out.

I will persevere. One day I hope I will manage to extract some medium format loveliness out of this camera, free from fucked-up film loading, warped negatives, dodgy scanning and suspect focus. Or I can just pick up my E-M5.
