Analogue outing

· 422 words · 2 minute read

A return trip to the Ancient City, this time with Ian from Pattayadaze as a passenger. The day did not look very promising, with heavy rain all the way there; but it dried up as we arrived and we had the pleasure of cool weather and a watery sun all afternoon.

Ian found the place to his liking and was leaping from one attraction to the next, taking what he reckoned was a personal record in photos captured in one afternoon. I took a more gentlemanly, leisurely approach and managed to expend a whole roll of film in my Yashica (12 shots), plus half a roll with my Kiev.

Ian attempted to disrupt the journey by prattling on about some Scottish tennis player that had won something. I pointed out that he would only be described as Scottish if he had lost; but as he had won he would henceforth be described as being British. Then I turned up the music to stifle any further debate. Apart from that, it was a good outing, rounded off by a vegetarian Mexican meal plus Margarita upon arrival home.

I am sure you will find the slower pace and small amount of images after a day of shooting of film to actually improve your digital work as well - if you imagine that each click of the digital camera will cost you money the same way as film..I always thought I was doing well if I got 3 or 4 keepers from a 36 roll of 35mm or 2 or 3 from a 120 roll…compared to an 8 GB card full and only 40-50 really decent shots of digital…so I try to keep the the same attitude when shooting digital - - but you will get hooked when you see a really decent scan ( of even 35mm ) compared to even the most expensive digital - everything seems just much more “real” for lack of a better term…enjoying the blog and the film explorations!

Is comparison of analog photography against digital photography the same as with good old fashioned vinyl against MP3?

The scared use of film makes me think of my first boss who complain that it was now (30 years ago) too easy for software programmers to make mistakes (compilation & debugging was done in 5sec instead of 5hrs).

I’m not scared to use film - in fact sometimes I do it quite without care or reason….
