A tragic loss

· 546 words · 3 minute read

I am of course referring to the slice of orange I dropped on the floor this afternoon.

And in other news, Baroness Thatcher has died. It’s hard for me to express how upset I am about this news, although “not very” might serve as a summary. Still, no doubt the debate will rage between the “best prime minister ever” brigade and those who would prefer to have seen her shot several decades ago, and that will be worth observing from a distance.

You LOST a slice of orange by dropping it on the floor? Could you not have recovered it and rinsed until clean and fit for consumption?

Sorry, I should have mentioned that she who must be obeyed then stood on it. I hope you now understand the enormity of my loss.

I was all for giving Thatcher a military burial back in 1980. This is rather a case of too little too late.

I am so sorry for you! But don’t worry: There are other slices of oranges in the sea!

You appear to infer that you would have done this without a funeral…

He does rather take on so! It was only a slice, not the whole jolly orange…

What is this Twitter of which you speak?

Robin implies. Grant infers. Thatcher gets to be interred.

I have no idea, something that young people get up to I expect. But if you click on the little blue tab on the top of this page, you can follow me on it. Allegedly.

The end of ‘wonderful’ singing career?

Nice to see you old chap. Hoped my total misuse of the term would get you out…

Guildford, so good to have you back after such an absence (how’s the bread?).

Sad then that I have absolutely no idea what you are on about. As usual, you are operating on a different intellectual level.

Edit: Oh, I see (having visited Twitter with hashtag).

Those who recognise Russell Brand as a fiercely intelligent young man will not be surprised at the following piece. Whatever your views of him, it’s a finely observed piece of writing on Thatcher:

And whatever your views on Margaret Thatcher are it is as well to remember that the free world in which Russell Brand is able to express his views was fought for by her and so many others…

2013-04-11 | Spike says

Oh, bollocks. What did she ever do to promote, let alone fight for, a free world? Refused to support sanctions against South Africa, courted the detestable Pinochet, killed a lot of people in defense of a colonial acquisition a long way away. I get very wary when people start banging on about being free or freedom.

Of course it’s bollocks, I was trying to be a bit ironic, never mind… Loved the clip, magic! Still don’t want to go to Belgium…
