Ten years

· 733 words · 4 minute read

Ten years ago today, I made my way to the upper level of Starbucks on Beach Road to meet a young lady for a coffee.

In those ancient days, Facebook did not exist; but there were other social sites where people could post photos of themselves with a bit of personal info. One of these was called, as far as I can remember, Facepic; and I chanced upon a photo of a rather cute looking girl. With my usual suave style, I asked “how about a coffee?”, and her acquiescence led to our meeting in Starbucks.

At the time she was a manager of a branch of another coffee house chain and we ended our evening driving back to her outlet to check on a water leak, which is about as romantic as I can manage; so it was a good start to what turned into something of a relationship.

The young lady was of course she who must be obeyed, and I remember that first meeting because she recently forwarded me a mail I had sent her on the following day containing some photos it is forever emblazoned on my heart.

At lot has happened in the ten years since that first coffee. I retired from work, took up photography again and became a professional layabout. She worked a series of jobs, did a three year MBA, and is now something important in a major company. Oh, and we married and acquired two cats.

She is my best friend, the kindest person I know, a constant source of laughter and delight, and I can’t imagine living life without her.

Starbucks’ coffee is over-priced crap; but that large cappuccino ten years ago was the best coffee I have ever had.

having had the pleasure of meeting this very nice lady albeit for just a brief breakfast meet before she went off to work followed by me and Spike heading off ( not always in the right direction ) to the Ancient City for a day with our toys. I can assure reader’s who’ve not had the pleasure of meeting Spike’s good lady she is very beautiful, I think the only area she is lacking in is her eyesight. I make this comment having met Spike and presume she need’s a trip to specsavers. Shouldn’t really say that as my own wife who is also beautiful and ten years younger than this old git probably shouuld have gone to specsavers too. Congratulations to both of you guys and hope you’ve many more ten’s of years together.

I too have had the signal pleasure of dining with the pair of them and it is patently obvious that SWMBO is a jolly good sort of the highest order and they really are deeply attached to each other. Joint cats, that’s hard to beat. I’d take slight issue with Kevin on the eyesight question - she clearly saw right past Uncle Spike’s rugged craggy exterior to the soft centre within that he strives to hide from all the rest of us! Congratulations you two and we’ll all hope for many more happy years together for you.

Don’t know about you Kevin, but once I told I came from Newcastle, she practically fell into my arms; muttering something along the lines of “North of the Tyne, always be mine”.

And in case Jock gets any ideas, she also said “close to Hadrian’s Wall, or not at all”

Kevin needs a punctuation lesson!

When he writes nice stuff like that, he can punctuate however he wants!

[…] and our congrats go to Spike, who met “her who must be obeyed” more or less exactly ten years ago. Ten years ago, Mitchie & me were married already. We didn’t have any cat(s) during that […]
