2013-01-30| Meh saysPatdays What do you suggest for a waterproof youtube camera? I’m expecting video, web quality, snorkling rather than diving.
I read a review of the Pentax WG3 and thought it was ideal, but I guess the other makers have similar cameras, I just couldn’t find which is the best one or even the cameras the competitors make.
Any suggestions?
2013-01-30| Spike saysI know nothing about waterproof cameras.
I recommend you do what I do whenever I want anything, I head for Google. Start with “waterproof camera reviews” and you end up with links like: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/waterproof-2012/waterproofA.HTM
Read everything relevant and recent.
Go to DPReview and look at the recently released waterproof cameras on the front page (including the WG3). Read comments from readers. Go to the relevant forum on DPreview for the cameras that interest you and see what people are saying about them.
Make a decision and get out your money.
Good luck!

2013-01-31| The Lightweight saysThere is one thing I wonder about. The FF cameras have huge lenses, and I am told this is so because the sensor is huge. However, an old analog SLR I have uses Schneider-Kreuznach lenses whose glass diameter is really small, much smaller than that of the modern FF lenses I have seen. But the film was just as large as the FF sensor, right? How come that modern FF lenses need to be so large, really?
2013-01-31| Spike saysPuzzles me too. The OM-1 is “full frame” and is the same size as the OM-D. Check out the Sony RX1, full frame digital, and tiny. Or any Leica. I suspect part of the bulk comes from the battery to drive the electronics. My 1D battery is massive, but will take 5,000 shots. My OM-D battery is tiny, but only does 300. The OM-1 doesn’t need a battery (other than a tiny thing to drive the exposure metre). The other driving force maybe the need to provide something to hold onto for longer lenses. A 300mm F2.8 full frame lens is a monster, so they make monster bodies to match it. All conjecture. I hope that as full frame mirrorless cameras come to market they will keep the small size we are currently enjoying.
2013-02-01| John Griggs saysI have an OM-1 MD, and of course the MD stands for “motor drive”. People actually sent the first series of OM-1’s back to Olympus for modification for a motor drive and Olympus finally released a version with the drive coupling already installed.
If you put that drive on you’ll know what heavy is, lol. I just sold a Nikon FE2 with the MD12 and my goodness! Like having a cinderblock around your neck, lol.
But I do very much love my OM-D E-M5 and mine is the silver and black and I favor silver lenses also. Actually – I like the black better aesthically for sure. But if you shoot in the sun you begin to appreciate a silver camera after awhile as it stays cool and helps keep the sensor noise down.

2013-02-01| Spike saysNeighbour bought his OM-D many months ago and it is noticeably noisy; and gets only slightly noisier when you hold down the shutter to invoke the IS. Mine is almost silent (can hear a very very faint hiss if you jam up to the ear in a quiet room; but then reaches the same volume when the shutter is half depressed. Seems like Olympus have made some changes to the design at some point. I got the black because I was only going to get the extra grip, which blends in nicely with the black version, but not with the silver. Never thought about the sunlight aspect, I will have to fit it with a jaunty little bonnet to keep the sun off!
2013-02-01| John Griggs saysIt’s not a hardware change actually but software. Olympus seems to have found they don’t need to spin-up the gyro (or whatever is in there) as much as they thought and if one updates the firmware, the camera is MUCH quieter. When I bought mine it sounded like you neighbour’s – but now it’s quiet like yours. Compare your firmware revision with their and you might find the answer and they can update to the “hiss of bliss” instead of the “angry cat”, lol.
2013-02-03| Spike saysThanks John, my tardy neighbour was on 1.4; now his noise levels have reduced!
