Tried a few shots against the setting sun this afternoon, and I think this one worked very well with the dying sun reflecting off the mallet and the tail. Slow shutter speed blurred the legs, and the horse was conveniently airborne. Result.

2012-12-29| Grant says…and you’re a man of your word! Really nice shot, methinks the rider would write a cheque out pretty quick-smart for it. Wonderful levitation, surely one of your best…
2012-12-29| sproggit saysSpike would have us believe that he wanders down to a polo pitch and comes back with collections of perfectly airborne horses… If pushed he may well argue that the absurdly high continuous shooting rate of a 1D IV means that odds are he will get a few shots of horse and rider in mid air.
There is another possibility however… All you’d need would be a helicopter, or one of those really big cranes [like the ones at the construction sites Spike keeps visiting…], some belly straps for the horses, and Photoshop to air-brush out the straps for the final image.
I reckon that Spike saw one of those “leviation” photography web sites, like this one:-

and thought, “Ha! I can go one better than that…”
Hugely impressed, all the same…

2012-12-30| Spike saysRumbled. Still, photoshopping out the crane was a challenge.
2012-12-30| Spike saysI think so. A print and a frame may be in order.
2012-12-30| Grant saysYes, and hitting sproggit’s website will give you some wildly impressive ideas for a new career for the cats…
2012-12-30| Wolfgang Lonien saysWow, that’s perfect! Congrats on a very nice photo - and have a great 2013!
2012-12-30| Wally saysIt looks like the horses tail is on fire - is that the secret to get them jumping !
2012-12-30| Grant saysJust one of the secrets of the photography trade. I’m told “bricking” is very effective, it certainly works for camels as I’m sure Pete and his numerous shaking children can attest, but only on the males of course…
