She who must be obeyed had a couple of days off, so we decided on a bijou tripette to Koh Chang. This involves 3-4 hours driving south (time varies with pee and snack stops), followed by a ride on a ferry.

Then there was a short trip round the winding island roads until we arrived at our hotel, the apparently five star Amari. I had booked a no smoking room with a king size bed, and they happily dropped us into a foul smelling room with two beds. Not good enough so I demanded a change, and they left us standing next to some railing while they went to get an alternative key. Not a problem, except the railing was in the process of being painted; but there were no warnings and my wife ended up with brown varnish on her hands and clothes. So we were not in the best of tempers by the time we finally arrived in the room we had asked for. Avoid the Amari.
Apart from that, we had a good time. We took a walk to a waterfall where I was eventually coaxed into what I considered to be unpleasantly cold water, although I will admit it was quite warm once I acclimatised. Then we sat on the beach and enjoyed the sunset, something we could always do here but never seem to find time for.

Seafood on the beach and then a visit to hotel bar where I amused myself by consuming Bombay Sapphire and taking photos of the ceiling lights.

The next morning we headed home via Chanthaburi where she who must obeyed had expressed a desire to check out the gem shops. Fortunately, by the team we had wandered round the market and bought some food, she had lost interest in gems. This was lunch:

We took a trip to a rather shitty beach to eat it, wandered round a mangrove swamp for some post-lunch exercise, and then made the long trek home.
650 kilometres in all, was in bed by 22:00; slept very well.

2012-11-24| Jock saysWhen I visited I had a beer Chang whilst riding a Chang on Koh Chang. We also fed a baby Chang with bananas and leaves. Good trip, but we never stayed at the Amari so maybe that was why !
