No posts over the past couple of days because I have done nothing worth writing about (not that that normally stops me). Having said that…
Finally cleaned up my photos so that I had several thousand fewer shots than I used to have, and all of them were sitting on my primary network drive. All I needed to do was to back up this drive to my second network drive and the job would be complete. Naturally, everything fell apart at this point. After thirty hours of attempting to back up 800GB, a mere 78GB had been backed up and then the job crashed.
I spent an entire day trying to resolve this. Browsing internet forums provided plenty of ammunition to suggest it was the network drive vendor’s fault, alternatively it was all Apple’s fault; or you could pop onto a Christian forum and discover it was an act of god due to my wickedness. After much updating of firmware, general messing about, and praying (just in case the Christians were right); I discovered that one of my network cables, although working, was faulty. Change out the cable and backup complete in less time than it takes to say “I knew god wasn’t involved”.
So now I have all my photos on network drives and none on my computer; a situation that will change soon enough as gigabytes of horsey photos arrive.
Next problem was my computer which, since the installation of my new SSD and Mountain Lion, has been hanging for minutes at a time and then coughing back into life; usually in the first ten minutes after turning it on. I gave up on the god angle, but again the forums blamed the SSD vendor, or Apple, or both. Applying the usual adage of updating firmware where possible, I updated the SSD firmware; and the problem disappeared. Good times.
Flushed with success, I retired to the TV and had a mammoth Season 5 of Breaking Bad session. The first eight episodes of what will be the last ever season have been shown, and I consumed them all in one day. Fantastic, hard-hitting entertainment.
This morning I awoke to the pleasure of much spamming. Pointless comments containing no obvious evil links. Deleted them all apart from one which Grant had kindly already responded too. Changed the site so that posts more than 30 days old cannot be commented on, will open it up once the latest round of nonsense has died down.
So there you are, told you I have done nothing worth writing about. Maybe tomorrow will be more interesting.

2012-10-09| Spanky saysI hope you patched Mountain Lion as a new patch was released Sunday. New Lightroom patch is out as well. Happy you got everything working. If you can manage it you should consider upgrading your network to gigabyte. It makes a huge difference when you are moving large amounts of files versus fast Ethernet.
2012-10-09| Spike saysIt is a gigabyte network, except when a cable is buggered. It has to throw up a photo in Lightroom as quickly as if it were sitting on a drive in the computer, which it does. Lightroom and ML updated, but thanks for the pointers.
