The prancing pony season is nearly upon us and I need more disk space.
Most of my photos sit on a 1TB network drive, which backs up to another 1TB network drive. Recent shots are held on the computer and moved to the network drives every month or so. Except that hasn’t happened in 2012 because my network drives are almost full.
Have been ignoring the problem for a while (since around March), but last week I decided to do something about it by ordering a new NAS drive complete with a couple of 3TB drives. But there is no current stock of the items I am after, so it is on to plan B, which is to clear out my crap/redundant photos, which take up at least half of my current storage.
So today I sat in Lightroom and deleted thousands of photos, at least one of which I will no doubt decide I want to access tomorrow. Seven thousand bike shots were culled, which still left about a thousand of the best (which is enough bike shots for a lifetime); and all non-special polo shots prior to the 2010 season went in the trash can. Got as far as ‘S’ in my main library before I decided I had had enough photo deletion for one day.
On my way through I found this, taken seven years ago:
The composition and the shutter speed give no sense of height or velocity; but that somehow makes the ladies faces more prominent. Fun photo, not deleted.
In between deleting photos by mistake, I amused myself on eBay looking at cheap medium format film cameras. Once you are no longer frightened by the prospect of shooting film again, the possibilities for obscure gear acquisition increase exponentially. Managed to resist clicking “Buy it Now”; but have just made a stiff gin and tonic, so we will see if my resolve has been weakened sufficiently for that rather nice Yashica Mat-124.

2012-10-06| Spanky saysWhy don’t you store some of the stuff in the cloud? Amazon cloud storage is now offering their new service called cold storage that makes the pricing ever cheaper per gigabyte. You can install the client on your Mac and just set to upload and be done. I also sent you an invite to Bitcasa which I use. Infinite storage. I get it for free right now.
I love medium format. I am not comfortable with film yet. I don’t like not being able to see what I am doing. It’s more like an act of faith. I would love to get my hands on a medium format with a digital back. If you are really interested I can point you in a direction of a site where you can find them for less than you would on ebay. Just not sure about shipping to Thailand.
2012-10-06| Spike saysThanks, but my internet speeds are appalling, plus if I want to get at a photo I want it available immediately in Lightroom via a gigabit LAN connection. By all means point me at a site that sells gear!
