Heart of glass

· 456 words · 3 minute read

During our brief walk around Asiatique last week, we stumbled upon a stall called “Smile and Bless”. The name didn’t tell you much, but it was awash with lampshades made with glass, which gave a clue as to what was on sale.

The owner is Khun Jum and he explained that there is a German owned factory in Thailand which makes glass tubing for a variety of purposes, and as part of the process they have offcuts which they discard, up to five million pieces a year. Khun Jum takes the offcuts and fashions them into the most amazing structures.

I don’t have space for any of his shades, but he did have some little glass balls which I thought might be fun to try and photograph. I chose one and she who must be obeyed chose another, you can probably guess who chose which:

More photos of those once I have worked out how to light mine and have dropped hers on the floor by mistake.

Even Khun Jum’s “business card” came as a glass container. Nice chap and good to see discarded German waste being used so creatively.

In my experience Thais are useless at most things, largely due to a lack of common sense and logic. And a decent, questioning education. . But when it comes to anything creative I think they can equal anyone in the world. Many such as this chap own small market shops to sell their unique goods and you can find some amazing stuff, often a one-off. Even home-made shoes. Imagine what that would cost in the real world.
