I have a complaint about OWC; and the complaint is that their customer service is too good.
Not so long ago I reported that the SSD in my Mac had died. I also mentioned that the drive seemed to have a different serial number than that on the invoice, so a warranty claim was unlikely. And if it did succeed, I would get an inferior replacement after several months of haggling. So I bought a new one and it is installed and running.
With very little hope I contacted OWC and they gave me a warranty claim number. Stuck the old 80GB drive in the post, with the claim number on the envelope and expected to hear nothing for a long time.
OWC don’t make 80GB SSDs any more; so their choice for a replacement would either be either a 30GB or a 120GB drive of a design much improved since I bought my previous drive. If they agreed to do anything, I expected the smaller drive, shipped by basic US postal service and arriving sometime around November.
So suck my socks and call me a catholic when a package arrived yesterday via Fedex International Priority containing a brand new 120GB SSD; exactly the same model as I had (unnecessarily) bought two weeks ago. Clearly marked as a warranty replacement too, so no tax to pay.
Now, thanks to the rather excellent support from OWC, I am looking rather foolish with a spare SSD. Damn you OWC, please try and be less efficient in future.

2012-07-10| Spanky saysPut the drives into Raid 1 so if one of them dies again no big deal.
2012-07-10| Spike saysCould do; but everything backs up every hour, and installing from backup to a new SSD takes 27 minutes (I timed it), so maybe there is a better use. I have an old Macbook which might love an SSD refresh.
2012-07-10| Spike saysThey might do if i know who they are. Actually I know Mitchell, but not in combination with Webb.
2012-07-10| Spanky saysJust use your hammer when you install it in the Macbook. Will make things go much faster. :)
