Having been doing more b&w recently I think it gives photos the timeless look and it really brings out features that color would other wise mask.
2012-07-20| Diddly Don saysColor????
Surely if you shot the picture in colour it would have been better.
2012-07-20| Diddly Don saysColor?
Surely if you shot the picture in colour it would have been better.
2012-07-20| Spike saysI shot it in colour; but there are so many in the image that they distract from her face. I think the black and white version looks better. In other words, what Spanky said.

2012-07-20| genuinej saysGorgeous?? How much has Spanky had? A visit to Specsavers is required as a matter of urgency Interesting, yes. But gorgeous, ffs. And what’s with the varying number of ?s with Diddly Don? And why can’t Spanky spell colour correctly? And why can’t Spanky use otherwise as one word rather than two? So many questions. So little time.

American. While I can fluently speak and spell your version of “English” I do like to stick to the colonial version I was taught. I do have one question. How come your alphabit ends with Zed and not Z? The mind boggles.
Spike, I’m sorry that the readers of your site aren’t true fans of the photographic arts. It’s apparent that the subtle tones and textures in this portrait brings out the beauty of the image and the woman. It tells a story.
Why did you use ffs? If you could add a extra and dare I suggest it, useless U to color? Would spelling out the words be too much? Worn out from the extra vowels that are needlessly added?
Did I clarify my portions? I’ll let Diddly Don respond to your inquires separately.
PS - Spike please ban genuinej for being an obvious racist and a hater of people color. :P
Full disclosure - I’m so damn white that even Thais tell me I need color. I like to think of my skin coloring as pale.
2012-07-21| Spike saysOr more perhaps “So many questions. Too much wine” ? And didn’t you chastise me once for starting a sentence with “And”? Be as harsh with me as you like, but please remember we have people from more than one country that visit here, and not all have the same spelling conventions or grammatical standards that you do; and it really doesn’t matter.
2012-07-21| galumay saysIt would be interesting to see the image with less contrast and not such a ‘harsh’ look. While I accept that the image is typical of the style of exposure used in much street photography I do find it a bit ‘overdone’. (hope that doesnt come across as too critical, its more an observation about my sense of aesthetics.) Do you use Silver Efex Pro or just Lightroom?
2012-07-21| Spike saysI tend to agree with you. Just Lightroom; but maybe it is too much.
2012-07-21| Spanky saysI use Silver Efex and Topaz B&W. I find Silver Efex to be better at selective coloring than Topaz B&W but for b&w Topaz handles it better with more options. I like the fact that I can add grain to an image with various “film types” and the size of the grain as well. While I have never shot with film (damn you Spike for tempting me!) I do like the look of it when I digitally do it.
2012-07-21| Spike saysDeveloped another film this afternoon. No cock-ups and very quick. Have to wait for the morning for it to dry before I can check it out though. Shooting film needs patience!
2012-07-21| Wally saysI would like to see the complete lady in colour, everything else in b&w - that would make a great photo and should please most readers.
2012-07-22| Spanky saysI don’t have patience nor do I have any desire to play with chemicals. I like working in digital because I get immediate feedback and if I screw something up I can fix it. I just like the way your camera looks. Find a way to buy those cheap Russian bodies, rip out the gears and other bits, shove a image sensor in it and a nice LCD or just a EVF and I’ll gladly buy one! Should be a good rainy day project for you.
