Analogue soaking

· 231 words · 2 minute read

Bought a film for my rangefinder camera this morning and, after a few false starts, loaded it into the camera.

Took the silver beast down the beach this afternoon and it is not to be hurried. First in the absence of a light metre I had to use another camera to get a reading. Then set the Kiev to infinity focus before changing the aperture (don’t ask), and then make sure that the film had been advanced before changing the shutter speed otherwise the thing would explode. Then put camera to face and wiggle the focus wheel to align the rangefinder images.

There are many things that could hinder decent photos. The camera could be leaking light. The focus mechanism might bear no relationship to what the lens is doing. I might have left the lens cap on. The advertised shutter speeds are unlikely to be exact after 52 years. The chances of lovely images appearing first time out are remote.

We will find out when I have finished the film. But I haven’t done that yet because the heavens opened when I was way down the beach and I was completely soaked within minutes. Bloody analogue camera; this never happened when I shot digital.

Hope it´s waterproof … 52 years old probably unlikley.

It isn’t, but my camera bag is.
