Barely scraping a living? Nice photo, I hope you stayed and talked with him, he looks like the sort of chap one could learn things from…

And now the details of making the photo. Distance? What lens? …. etc. Very curious because I like the amazing detail in the photo.

Unfortunately I was meant to be pointing my lens in the other direction so couldn’t stop; but he certainly has one of those faces worthy of respect and further investigation. Unlike, for example, mine.

Canon 1D Mark 4 with 300mm F2.8 lens at F3.2, 1/2500 second, ISO 320. The detail in the full size version is quite extraordinary.

Any idea how far from object? You think you could have taken same pic with your Panasonic?

2012-03-26 | Spike says

Far enough away that I had to shout to get his attention. The 300mm makes a wonderful, but not exactly intimate, portrait lens. I was taking beach shots with the GX1 and the Panny/Leica 25mm and they held up well against the Canon. But suspect it couldn’t match this shot for detail and boken; but then we are talking about $5,000 and one of the best lenses Canon has ever made.

It’s pictures like this and your stock photos for Glue Producers Monthly that make me want the full frame Canon that I keep finding reasons not to buy. I am leaning towards selling my APS-C Canons and the EF-S lenses and just buying a 5D to supplement the M4/3 bodies and lenses. Damn you Spike!

Don’t do it!! Well, yes, sell the Canon stuff; but then get the Panny/Leica 25mm. Check the latest model shots; good enough without going to all the expense and weight and bollocks that a 5D would involve.

The 25mm is being ordered this week or next. I found a very good deal on it new. I agree with the weight. I cringe when I see everyone carrying those massive bodies. Still a part of me lusts after the full frame camera and if I find one on eBay for a reasonable price I will likely pick it up.
