Not so good at marinas

· 359 words · 2 minute read

Yesterday, I made a passing remark that Thais are pretty good at building roads; and it’s true. The Kingdom has many fine roads of excellent quality, often in places where you would not expect to find much more than a dirt track. It would appear, however, that that level of expertise does not extend to water based structures.

Pattaya is getting a marina. Or more precisely, a place where all the crappy speedboats that take tourists to Koh Larn, and sometimes bring them back without drowning them, can be parked up overnight; rather than dragging them out of the water and littering the roadside.

Here is the grand design:

Note the officials in the bottom left, admiring the marina and congratulating themselves on how much cash they have made out of it. And it certainly looks like an impressive piece of construction, on the poster anyway.

Now look at the reality:

As suppose it won’t make much difference once the whole thing has been covered in concrete; but it’s pretty sloppy work. Still, if you compare it to the quality of the light fittings on the path next to the water, you can see a certain theme emerging, and the theme is “crap”.

The only reason we have good roads in Thailand is thanks to bribery and corruption, otherwise the Thais wouldn’t bother building them !

Don’t think it will get the shitty speedboats of the streets, I think they want this sort of clientele: http://www.megayacht-brokers.com/boats/index.php Get your chequebook!

I bought two.

Hard to imagine gear like that around here. “Henry darling. shall we pop to Monaco for champagne at the casino, or would you rather a baht bus to Walking Street in Pattaya and you can fondle a ladyboy.

It’s a no-brainer: build it and they will fondle.

We are arranging for a sign saying “Build it and they will fondle” to be erected at the entrance to the construction site.
