Just up the road from Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai is the King’s winter palace. The buildings are not open the public, but there are acres (or rai if you prefer) of most beautiful flower gardens I have encountered in Thailand. Well worth a visit; but you have to phone first to make sure they are open.

2011-02-23| Wally saysMy Thai wife and I visited a village (Hmong!) possibly even further along the road from Doi Suthep and the King’s palace about 19 years ago. The ’livelihood’ a few years earlier was in Opium but that had been changed (maybe!) into a tourist village complete with Opium museum. The gardens, lakes and inhabitants were very picturesque. I wondere if this is the same place you visited?
