She who must be obeyed is becoming increasingly interested in being a photographer. Specifically, she fancies earning some cash from stock photography; just like I’m not. I have warned here that, should she manage to make a sale before I do (in other words, ever); then the penalty will be divorce; which I feel is reasonable punishment.

So she has been snapping away and fiddling around in Lightroom, the latter very slowly. The reason for the tardiness is her hand-me-down iMac which used to be mine before I promoted myself to a Mac Pro. It’s a little slow nowadays, partly because she has filled the machine with crap; but also because the iMac is more than three years old and technology has moved on somewhat.

I made a couple of half-hearted remarks that we should get her a new machine; but I was careful to only suggest this when she was out of the room. But the iMac heard me, and yesterday, after 1212 days of loyal and continuous service, it presented a screen of squiggles by way of announcement that it was not going to play any more. Bugger.

The next step will be to deposit at the shop we bought it from, then it will be sent it to the Apple repair centre in Bangkok, then they will invent a complex failure costing enormous amounts of cash, which I will decline and the once loved machine will end up in a skip. Or maybe not, and it will be returned in full working order for a small repair charge. But it will still be slow and it is time for an upgrade, even if I can’t really afford to lash out on new computers at the moment (due to the need to buy new camera gear. Oh, and the exchange rate).

So down to Tuk Com this morning (I refuse to buy anything from the tossers at Central Beach Road), and she who must be obeyed is now the owner of a brand new, top bottom of the range, iMac. She paid for most of it with her credit card on the understanding I will pay her back next month. Of course, if she sells a photo before then I can divorce her and thus exonerate myself from any liability.

So if you will excuse me, I just have to pop on-line and buy a rather nice photo of a handbag.

Same thing happened with my iMac on Friday… so a good excuse to buy a new one. Even better news - they are repairing my old one, so I’ll have the use of two iMacs - just what i (don’t) need. 3 year old, 2nd hand iMAC anyone?

As I am not very tech smart, would you recommend a new iPad over a iMac as a Christmas gift for Thai wife?

I guess she just wants the faceybook thing and download tunes. Can’t imagine she will do any actual computing work.

Antz, suspect you got the 27" zillion core monster?

MSB, iPad; but she will need a computer to sync it with.

You’re unstoppable. What would Apple do without you?
