Hilly temple

· 546 words · 3 minute read

Driving through Petchaburi and we see a cluster of temples on top of a hill. The main entrance offered a long climb to the top; not my idea of fun at all. But round the back there was a cable car which was much more to my liking. The cable car entrance hall was delicately carved to portray activities typically undertaken by pious monks:

The ride was somewhat rickety and for a while I pondered whether walking may have been the wiser decision.

On firm ground at the top, we discovered that the cable car had not saved us from exercise, every damn building had been constructed such that you had to walk down a steep hill and then up the other side to visit anywhere. I looked in vain for some sort of golf cart service for the old and infirm (me), but instead I just had to sweat, don’t think it was worth it.

Looks like a funicular to me. Surely it’s only those uneducated ex-colonials over the pond that call them cable cars. To me a cable car is suspended, a-la ski resorts.

Nice looking temple by the way - do they do a lot of wind surfing up there?

There was a big sign outside that said “Cable Car”. So it must be a cable car. Not much windsurfing, but a load of jetskis.

Is not, jetsking off a tall hill somewhat dangerous?. As a former pilot I like to ask these technical questions.

Much like Nakhon Sawan I imagine with that Chinesey joint up on the top of the hill overlooking the area, and my squeeze telling me that it was 999 steps all the way to the top. Wee short arse Wee steps on a 50% unpward inclination.

Mind you that was 14 years ago, but I assume it is still there. Geology and al’. She ran the pharmacy in a hospital there. Some interesting free goodies to be had there…..heh-heh-heh.

Anyway, these days I’ll just pay a native or two to carry me or comfortably look from a distance as my right leggie doesn’t seem to be very good friends with me any more.

Nice pics though.

Glad to see you’re getting out and about, having, presumably gotten over your recent malaise. “gotten” because I’m in the Land of the States on holiday with my own SWMBO.I’d rather be in the Land of Smiles though. I went to that temple earlier this year, and fully agree with your comments.

genuinej, you must be suffering daily grammatical and spelling anguish. So they actually have the internet in the USA? Not quite as backward as the rest of the world believes them to be. You ‘all have a good day now.

There’s also a couple of cave sanctuaries nearby, khao looang and khao ???, if you are lucky (or organised) to be there at the right time to see the shafts of sunlight shining down thru a hole onto the buddhas inside the cave you can get a good photo …and no climbing hills.

“no climbing hills”; sounds perfect!
