It’s mid February and the streets, beaches and shopping malls are still clogged with visitors enjoying the sunshine and spending their national deficit dollars (or laundered roubles). Quite honestly they have been here long enough, and it is time for them to fuck off back to where they came from and leave us in peace.
There was glimmer of hope this week when Thailand made it into the critical category of the TRI. This would be good news for the country if TRI was an acronym for Tremendous Restaurant Infrastructure; but sadly it stands for Terrorism Risk Index and Thailand now joins the likes of Iraq, Afghanistan and New Zealand Somalia in the critical category.
You would think that this would have led to a mass exodus of travellers, but no. They are all still here, wandering around aimlessly and formingl endless queues in 7/11 shops; mainly young Russian girls buying litre bottles of gin and one can of tonic.
And now things are even worse. Australia and Canada, annoyed with their low ranking on the TRI, have hit back with a travel advisory. Tourists not already hiding in underground bunkers as a result of the TRI threat, are being advised to avoid Bangkok because of the upcoming million man hundred thousand man five men and a pony red shirt demonstrations. Alternative destinations being suggested include Pattaya.
Great, thanks Australia and Canada. Now we will be descended upon by packs of crazed tourists, rattled by terrorism threats and scared shitless by the thought of meeting someone with a red shirt. It may be May before things get back to normal.
Sod it, I’m going out to queue with the Russian girls for a bottle of gin, and to hell with the tonic.
