Head north out of Pattaya and you may spot a large and garishly painted building on your left. It’s Baan Suukhawadee, built by the family that runs the Saha Farms Group. Clearly there is plenty of money available, with large buildings and statues covering 80 rai of prime land.
Two hundred baht to get in, or a hundred baht if you can flash a Thai driving licence. Large halls to wander around, a general feeling of weirdness, doesn’t really feel Thai at all. And a lot of bling. Perhaps no coincidence that the golden buttocks shop is just over the road.

2009-08-09| Barry saysI happened to visit this place, which I dub the Pattaya Palace, on an ‘Open Day’, which meant it was free to get in. Just as well, as I would have refused on principle to pay the higher fee as a non work permit/Thai driver license holder. Another example of racism, as the owners obviously don’t need the extra 100 baht. They charge it only because they believe they should charge foreigners more. There is an interesting history to the company that owns it involving trade unions and murder. Look it up, or read a submission I made about the place on Stickman. But, quite a place indded, and way over the top. On the other hand, it does show the quality that Thai workers can produce if they can be assed to to do it. I used to think it was where all the performers at Tiffany’s lived….

2009-08-10| Jamie Monk saysThat is truly horrible, it has put me right off my food. It’s like a super sweet Thai dessert made into a house.
2009-08-10| Spike saysBarry, would like to read the Stickman article but their is no search facility. Any chance of a URL?
The Son, it’s in a different area, but the architecture (if it is fair to use that word) is similar.
Jamie, In Isaan they have houses made into desserts.

2009-08-11| Barry saysOkay, here’s the link: http://www.stickmanbangkok.com/Reader2007/reader3654.htm
I didn’t think anyone would actually be interested enough to take up my offer to read it…
Always thought Stick should have a search facility. He’s considered it in the past but decided against.
2009-08-11| Spike saysThanks. Interesting reading, especially the murder bit.
