Several miles of cabling, endless plugs and transformers, much gnashing of teeth; the Spike computer desk is finally complete. Note that it also includes the unplanned, but now permanently resident, cat.

For those who have any interest in these things: iMac (SWMBO), Mac Pro (Me), Macbook (shared, i.e. squabbled over), Canon colour printer, HP Laserjet, 2 Synology NAS drives connected through a gigabit switch to the Mac Pro, 1TB external Firewire back-up drive, wireless router, Korat cat. And a pot plant running Windows Vista (it doesn’t do anything useful, so the OS is assumed).
All that remains is the hanging of some suitable photos on the wall, which will no doubt be the subject of much debate between myself and SWMBO over the coming days. Oh, and the purchase of a couple of 24" matte backlit LCD monitors from Apple to replace the crappy Samsung; which is a bit of a problem because the boys from Cupertino haven’t introduced them yet.
Overall, I am very pleased with the new arrangements, introduced solely to facilitate the production of this publication. So if you would all form a queue and make a small donation to the cost? Thank you.

2009-07-17| Wenthworth saysHi, I have a few questions. The Korat, which operating system does it use? why is it always pictured in stand by mode? Finally how often do you need to reboot it?
2009-07-17| Spike saysgenuinej, please leave behind the toilet door at Central Mall in a plain brown envelope marked “tractor spares”.
Wenthworth, valid questions indeed. It was fitted with Windows MEow, but that caused seizures and vomiting so it is now running Mac OS X Pussy. The Energy Saving setting defaults to “Put the Korat to sleep when the owner is inactive for 5 seconds”, there seems to be no way of altering this. Reboots are triggered automatically by the application of food or by running the “owner is doing something I might be able to interfere with” application. Or by a boot.
2009-07-17| Wenthworth saysLooks very nice and I trust you’ve already removed the painters tape from around the switches. There is something missing though I just couldn’t put my finger on it. It’s too masculine, too much Yang and too little Ying. As a favour to you I emailed a copy of the above photo to a Feng Shui master friend of mine currently engaged by Stanley Ho designing a Macau casino interior. Unexpectedly I received a quick reply from a excited yet teary guru overjoyed to be relieved from the drudgery of his current work by this monumental and meaningful challenge. Such is the power of the interweb I can now preasent to you gratis, the fruits of his amazing genius.

2009-07-17| Spike saysThat had me in tears, especially as it EXACTLY the sort of thing SWMBO might bring home to brighten up her corner.
2009-07-17| Billy saysyes, yes, very nice, but WHERE is the beer fridge?
2009-07-18| Spike saysEliminated from the plans during the great purge of reality. Actually, I hardly drink anything anymore (apart from water and coffee), so there was not much point.
2011-11-12| Wombat saysYour friends were obviously a little short of cash at the time. I have some satang somewhere if it is not too late?
