This is Nino and he is my hero. He’s around seventy years old, ridiculously fit, and a fine windsurfer. More importantly, he is a good man. He lives a quiet life, making mountains of cheese and pasta (he is Sicilian) and is even tempered with a ready smile. I have endless respect for the man.
So it worrying that he has a tendency to sail off into the distance using equipment that is not in perfect condition. Something breaks and Nino is left floating for hours until he manages to swim to shore or is rescued.
Today he disappeared. Someone returned to shore reporting that a board had been seen floating alone, someone else spotted a sail and a sailor about 2 Kms out to sea. Jetskis were sent out to search; nothing. I headed home and for two hours I stood on the roof of my condo with a substantial pair of binoculars, scanning the water for a floating Nino; nothing.
Finally I received a call that he had been recovered. Lucky man, please don’t do it again.
