Odea, I don't know eddo

· 417 words · 2 minute read

A trip to the iTunes store to download the iPhone/Touch version of Facebook poker and I discover another game by the same company called Scramble.

Scramble gives you a 4x4 grid of letters and you have to make as many words as you can from the letters in two minutes. Slick little game on the iPhone and even includes a feature where you can go and play against other people. So I drop into a game of 96 players and end up 51st. Try again and this time there are 83 players and I finish 39th. And so it goes. Every game I play I end up about midway through the results. And almost every game I play is won by a lady which must say something about female word powers.

The game tells you how many possible words there are (“you got 28 out of 161”). It also tells you that Carol from Ohio got 132 words and I wonder how the hell she did it. What’s an “odeo” I wonder and how does Carol slip that into her everyday conversations? And does she use “eddo” in the same sentence. I am baffled, impressed and clearly not very smart.

There is another option where you play a board and then pass to another person to play the same board. She who must be obeyed insists on having a go and achieves about 50% of my score which is impressive given English is not her first language.

And what is my excuse for doing no better than 50% of Carol from Ohio? I am Spike from Newcastle.

But I will remember to look for these in future games:

Odea - Plural of Odeum. Odeum -A small building of ancient Greece and Rome used for public performances of music and poetry.

Eddo - Edible starchy tuberous root of taro plants

I think Taro is the same as Yam?

In Malaysia we used to have Yam Basket, a circle of Yam, fried on the outside and soft on the inside. The circle would be filled with fried vegetables. It was absolutely delicious and I gained something of a reputation as a Yam Basket expert. The Lake Gardens restaurant served the best as I recall.

Damn, now I want a Yam Basket!
