Suggestions are made for an after-dark, squid fishing trip on SUP boards. The event is postponed until Saturday, but she who must be obeyed is not to be denied.
Her sunny view on life often results in a misplaced optimism; and by the time she returns home from work she has already arranged for a supply of dipping sauce to help us enjoy the cooked squid which we have yet to catch and have no idea how to prepare for cooking should we happen to catch any. To aid us in the hunt, she has also obtained a couple of squinty-eyed plastic lures equipped with evil hooks, which are intended to be irresistible to passing squid.
She starts to give me a quick instructional course in how to fish, until I point out I have caught my share of the denizens of the deep; and so off we go on the board, with me paddling and her shouting instructions in my ear and trying to tip us off.
We position ourselves at what she determines to be the optimum distance from the shore and out go the lures. After an hour or so, nothing is lured by the lures (apart from a plastic bag which made my heart rate rise momentarily), and we return to shore. I go out for a paddle alone and she chats up the many anglers stood next to the sea, none of whom appear to have caught anything either.
I am called back and we head out again, this time with clear instructions to keep the line shorter and stay closer to the shore. This time we catch two plastic bags; if we keep this up we may land a bin liner.
After two hours we give up. Even though we caught nothing, it was exciting, wondering how long it would be before she stuck a hook in my neck. And it was really very enjoyable to be out on the sea at night on a SUP. We vow to do it again with more advanced fishing techniques next time. Dynamite perhaps.

2008-10-09| Craig saysIt is very nice to be onthe water after dark. I have done a few sunset coast tours now. The last one was really good fun as we surprised the local beach front diners and passed some very nice and some not quite finished ocean front develpments.
I think SunSet SUP tours or evening exersize groups would work well, as it is not hot and no risk of Suntans to be had. Saterdaynight, fishing and short tour?

Reminds me of Stephen Fry: The key to dancercise is the rather ingenious coupling of the word ‘dance’ to the word ‘circumcise’
