Messages from Koh Chang

She who must be obeyed has left me again. This time she has gone to Koh Chang island where her company is developing a site of small land plots next to the sea at extraordinary prices. The boss of the company has taken a bunch of employees for a site-seeing visit which appears to involve a lot of eating and chatting.

A call an hour or so ago:

She: It’s very lovely down here. The sea is so clear and the air is so fresh and there is no traffic. Maybe we should think about buying some land.

Me: Hmmm. How did you get there?

She: Long drive, then had to take a ferry and the sea was rough.

Me: Any decent supermarkets on the island?

She: No.

Me: Any cinemas?

She: No.

Me: How about restaurants?

She: Yes, but the food is crap.

Me: Hospitals?

She: No.

Me: Hmmm.

She: Maybe we don’t want to buy land here after all.

Me: I agree with you.

Koh Chang, sounds nice but I wouldn’t want to live there. And certainly not at the prices her company is charging.

mmmmm … in fact the traveller did recognise the existence of restaurants, just said the food was crap.

Presumably the (well hidden) hospitals are provided with a steady stream of customers by the restaurants.

Thank you for your clarifications in capitals, without which we would have had no idea what you were on about.

“This traveller” (two ’l’s is the way I spell it), is my wife, and her vision is 20/20; which I admit is hard to accept given that she married me; but I assure you she is not blind which was what your rather obnoxious comment implied.

But indeed she did miss the only hospital (not “some”), which offers english-speaking doctors between 0830-1630 Monday-Friday, so don’t get sick outside those hours and don’t expect them to deal with something like a heart attack.

As for the food, she is Thai, she ate Thai food, she said it sucks. I believe her. I also believe what others tell me that the food is poor, the island is riddled with gangsters and it may be an OK place to visit for a while; but not to visit.

Your glowing endorsement I am sure is totally independent of the fact that you are in the property business….

I remember drinking Chang (beer) while riding a Chang on Koh Chang one time …. and there was even a baby Chang on trail with us at the time …

Fond memories … well worth a week-end trip.
