Down the river for the final time

· 294 words · 2 minute read

Kanchanaburi, Sunday

Heavy rains overnight and we woke to a river that was much closer to the bottom of the bridge than it had been the night before. This was good news however, because the paddlers were going to need all the help they could get on a journey that was 24 kilometres by road downstream, and considerably more by water.

This stretch was wilder and less inhabited than Saturday’s route, with some amazing rock formations.

After more than three hours hard paddling, the SUP riders were relieved to reach the end of the journey.

Can we have some lunch now?

The boards were loaded onto trucks, or onto the support boat; which took us back to the resort for a very late lunch.

Packing up

The journey home involved the usual confusion as we arrived in Bangkok, but at least we had the benefit of my most excellent music selections (other opinions are possible). Arrived home to cuddle she who must be obeyed, who had compensated for missing me desperately by indulging in extreme shopping and by joining a gym. I suspect the enthusiasm for the former will outweigh the latter.

She expressed the desire for a salad at Shenanigans to complement her new fitness regime, so I supported her efforts by having chicken and chips with two pints of Kilkenny. It was good to be home.

About eight hours on the water, 1200 photographs, ten hours of driving. I slept well.
