Swamp thing

A succession of Pattaya majors have vowed to raise the quality of the city’s attractions and indeed things are slowly getting better with improved shopping malls being built and an ever increasing number of decent restaurants and bars available. The fact that you can’t get to any of them easily because the roads are in ruin is mere detail.

The plan is to replace the current mix of tour groups and perverts who comprise the tourist base of fun town with a new mix of slightly more affluent tour groups and perverts. As a subsidiary benefit, things might get better for those of us who actually live here.

But every so often you come across an offering which is so utterly crap that you really wonder if Pattaya will ever drag itself out of the swamp.

And a swamp is a fair description of this ATV centre. A collection of sad four wheel bikes, a half-completed building and an ATV course that is substantially underwater. The good news is that the centre is tucked away down a little-used road out of town so very few people will actually stumble upon it and be appalled.

Maybe it has something to do with the majority of Thais being very little concerned about esthetics. Maybe it is not even concern but the lack of sense for it. Thais are more interested in functionality and are able to put the most beautiful thing near the ugliest one without seeing any problem with that… Personally I quite like that, the functionality-over-esthetics-principle does it for me! Okay, these swamps are nothing functional either…
