A book review

· 319 words · 2 minute read

I picked up a copy of “A Thousand Splendid Suns” last week. This morning I started to read it and by early afternoon I was 300+ pages in, and totally absorbed.

She who must be obeyed noted my concentration (I suspect she thought I was ignoring her, always taken as a challenge).

Her: What are you reading?

Me: A Thousand Splendid Suns. It’s a very sad story of two women living in Afghanistan. It tells the story of the country over the last few decades through the lives of these women. It’s beautifully written by Khaled Hosseini. He also wrote The Kite Runner, maybe you have heard of that; it was made into a movie.

Her: [Looks pensive for a while] I have heard of The Roadrunner. [Long pause] Beep! Beep!

I had to put the book away for a while. Over the course of the day it had dragged me into a world of suffering, hardship and humanity in Afghanistan; but it had only taken one beep beep to bring me back to reality.

The Thais are clearly more closely related to the Javanese than I had ever imagined.

And a source of constant amusement; far more fun than one of those European models.

I’ll second that … and the maintenance costs are a lot lower as well … a bowl of spicy soup, rice and that stinking fruit Durian is all that is expected … maybe some dead fried insects as an occassional treat and they Love You Big Time … none of your expensive Prada shoes and Louis Vitton or Gucci bags …

Louis Vitton bag. Check (3 at the last count) Gucci bag. Check And she has a degree in English so doesn’t say stuff like love you big time. So, not substantially cheaper, but way sweeter.
