A bit of local culture

It’s great to have friends and family come to visit; but what to do with them once they have descended upon you? Some countries are easier than others. I used to live in Kuala Lumpur. It was, and is, a green and pleasant city with plenty to occupy a resident. But along come the visitors and they want some Eastern culture, and KL doesn’t have much to offer other than a couple of rather boring temples. A bit short on bars full of katoeys too.

Thailand not only has bars full of katoeys, it also has so much culture that you tend to fall over it at every corner. More temples than you could possibly want to visit, and plenty of interesting and strange sights to entertain (e.g. a bar full of katoeys).

Had a friend to visit this weekend who has his camera welded to one hand. Late in the afternoon of his first day we took a wander around some places within a couple of kilometres of home and found plenty of sights for him to photograph. I acted as tour guide and took a few shots myself.

Having pressed the shutter enough times to satisfy his daily need, we took him to Walking Street in the evening where we played “spot the ladyboy” (my wife won, my friend lost) and wondered at the mixture of human life lumbering up and down the strip. And of course we saw a bar full of katoeys. Eat you heart out KL.

Ah Walking Street … a VERY dangerous place to try and chat up a f*male while drunk .. hilarious to watch others try if your ever sober.

Best place just off Walking Street is The Blues Factory and home of Lan Morrison … a Thai guy with amazing guitar skills … worth a visit.

Lam Morrison has his own place now, imaginatively titled “The Lam Morrison Rock Club.”
